Salmat Intranet

Company Intranet Website

In response to the company wanting to increase employee engagement, Salmat had decided to refresh their company Intranet. The intranet would connect employees from different locations in the world - Australia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and the Philippines. It was a business decision to use Google Sites to host and design the Intranet as part of a partnership with Google.

Research

The research phase kicked off by carrying out a stakeholder workshop where we formulated the business goals and KPI's to help inform the content strategy. We then identified the intended audience resulting in creating quick dirty personas and later using all the information we gathered running a card sorting exercise to identify the content on the current Intranet and assign them to meaningful buckets of categories.

Finally, based on the key priorities and key personas, we were then able to formulate an MVP matrix with all the features that would be suitable which was later prioritised for launch.

Navigation testing

Increasing find-ability of content and ease of use for the intranet were the main business objectives for the intranet design. Keeping this in mind, we kept things simple and only focused on the main content that users would particularly use the intranet for. We included a quick access block that allows the user to perform tasks that they may encounter during their day-to-day work - this would help increase the directness and reduce the time takes to find these actionable items. The decision to include this block was made based on multiple Navigation Tests we carried out, where we found the participants struggling to find the most used links in the past.

Current Navigation - Navigation is complex to find certain content

Proposed Navigation - Success rate to find certain content improved

Wireframes

The wireframe stage was a challenge as I had to build a design system based of the limitations the New Google Sites has to offer i.e. no breadcrumb feature, no article listing module and no sub menu feature. From constant testing and experimentation we finally managed to create a combination of a sub menu and breadcrumb. This would prove to be vital in order to clearly map the user's journey on the intranet.

Visual Design

The design was a challenge as we were very limited with the features Google Sites had to offer. Therefore creating a design system of creative assets such as buttons, tabs, and call-to-action blocks was required to push the boundaries of the visual styles Google Sites had to offer.

Constant iteration and experimentation helped to maintain the visual style and tone of the business without any compromises.

Style guide

A style guide was also provided for content managers to use when generating content for the intranet.
